Editing the Template

Templates are no longer a field in the content screen. They are restricted to webmasters, section managers and publishers…

Changing a section template

#webmaster #section manager

  1. Go to your section
  2. Select ‘Edit’ menu and ‘Template’
  3. In the ‘Template’ tab and the right-hand drawer, choose from one of the default or custom templates
  4. Select ‘Apply’
  5. To add or edit region and widget styles, or add or edit widget, go to the ‘Build’ tab

Creating a variant of a template

#webmaster #section manager

You can only create a variant of a template in an unlocked section template. Default templates, for example, are automatically unlocked.

So what is a variant? A variant occurs when you select a template and then make any change to it. Change the layout, edit a widget, add a style to a region. Any change. As soon as you save these changes you will have created a variant.

Yes, a variant, but what does that mean?

It means that your template is disconnected from the one you originally chose. If, therefore, you make a change to that template expecting sweeping changes across every section with that template, it won’t happen because yours is a variant and disconnected.

You’ll be able to see this when you go to edit your template. The template will have been copied and you’ll see the following message:

*Template has been altered in build or layout. As a result, any changes made to the original template will not apply to this section.

If you want to apply sweeping changes to the sections using a single template, you would have to select the original template again and then ‘Apply’.

How content type templates differ

Even if a content type template is unlocked you will not create a variant if you make a change to the build or layout.

Content types are designed to be uniform and consistent. That means, if you are a webmaster and you edit the build and layout of a content type, whatever template is selected will be updated as will every content type using that template.
